Why Unfiltered Leadership Matters (And Why ‘Nice’ Isn’t Enough)

There’s a story I keep coming back to. Last year, a coach of mine gave it to me straight: “Tori, you’re too nice.” At first, I thought—what’s wrong with that? I want to be nice. I aspire to it. But then she pressed in. She showed me how my content was leading with relatability rather than authority. She pointed out that people don’t pay for “nice”—they pay for expertise.
If I’m honest, that conversation ruffled my feathers. And in the months since, I’ve realised that’s exactly what needed to happen.
From Relatable to Respected
It’s easy to think the best way to build community is by being relatable. To want everyone to feel comfortable, never offended, always nodding along. But here’s the reality: no one pays for relatable. We invest in people who lead us. We look for experts who aren’t afraid to share opinions—even the ones that might sting a little.
And that’s where “unfiltered” comes in. It’s the reason I chose that word for this podcast season. To give myself permission to show up as a true leader, not just a likable face in the crowd. Sometimes, that means ruffling feathers or saying what others won’t. Sometimes, it’s a little bit uncomfortable—for both me and you. But it’s necessary.
Stepping Into Real Leadership
True leadership isn’t about being everyone’s friend. It’s about serving your audience, not just soothing them. Since I’ve started sharing my real opinions—yes, even the controversial ones—I’ve noticed a shift. Some people disagree, and that’s fine. But the people who stick around? They’re the ones I want to work with anyway. They want a leader, not just another voice echoing what everyone else says.
If you’re building a business, it’s time to ask: Are you showing up as a leader, or just someone relatable? The market is crowded. Your audience is looking for a reason to choose you—and it’s probably not because you’re nice.
Why Now Is the Time to Get Unfiltered
This moment—mid-year, with the market shifting beneath our feet—is the perfect time to get clear on your own leadership. What does it look like for you to be “unfiltered”? Where are you holding back an opinion or insight, just to keep the peace? What could shift if you gave yourself permission to lead, even if it ruffles a few feathers?
For me, unfiltered leadership means giving real, sometimes tough love. It means saying things others are thinking but not voicing. And it means being okay with not pleasing everyone. Because the goal isn’t to be everyone’s best friend. The goal is to be known for something. To stand for something.
